Professor Wigstein's Amazing Melody Machine (String Orchestra) M |
| |
This fun and original piece for string orchestra is a great introduction to the technique of 'tone painting'. It depicts inventor Professor Wigstein’s proud creation—a machine that plays some of the world’s most famous melodies: 'Ode to Joy', 'Eine Klein Nachtmusik', 'Can-Can', and Chopin's Funeral March. The introduction depicts the ceremonious unveiling of the amazing machine. With four turns of its crank, the machine comes to life, grinding and churning as it prepares to produce a melody. 'Ode to Joy' is heard, played pizzicato by the entire orchestra, and appropriately accompanied by generic 'machine' sounds (ratchet and bell). Soon, the machine winds down, and the melody comes to a halt. Once again, the machine is cranked, and begins working at another tune; 'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik' is heard. The machine winds down again, only to be cranked up a third time for Offenbach’s 'Can-Can'. Midway through the tune, however, something goes wrong with the machine. Fragments of all three melodies are heard (in a variety of clashing keys) as the machines goes out of control, eventually exploding. A few hisses, and some dying moans are emitted. Finally, Chopin’s 'Funeral March' is heard as the machine plays its own death knoll, dying with a final soft hiss. |

Listen as 'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik' changes to 'Beethoven's Seventh' to 'Stars and Stripes Forever' and back again! Your audience will love it as they 'surf' channels, including brief stops at the 'Opera' channel and the 'Sci-Fi' channel! This remote even has a 'pause' button that freezes the orchestra, and a 'mute' button that keeps them playing, but with no sound! Great fun for everyone! |

Rosamunde Overture (Full Orchestra) ME |
| |
Schubert composed his incidental music to the Romantic drama 'Rosamunde, Princess of Cypress' in less than three weeks, finishing just two days before the play's premiere in December of 1823. Not much time was left to rehearse the music, and no time at all to compose an overture. In fact, Schubert never did compose an overture to 'Rosamunde', but instead used an overture already composed for the drama 'The Magic Harp'. While the drama 'Rosamunde, Princess of Cypress' survived for only two performances, Schubert's charming music lives on. Festive and lyrical themes abound in this very playable arrangement that has been carefully crafted to preserve the sound of the original. A great way to introduce your students to one of the early Romantic period's great masters! |
