Michael Haydn was a prolific composer of secular music, including forty symphonies, a number of concerti and chamber music. Born in Austria, Michael Haydn attended choir school like his older brother Joseph. After leaving school he was appointed Kapellmeister at Grosswardein and later at Salzburg. He held the latter office for forty-three years, during which time he composed instrumental music and more than 360 pieces for the church, including Requiem in c, Mass in d and Lauda Sion. After his death in 1806, a memorial was erected in his honor in Salzburg.
